Bahman's letter to Sue,

Dear Sue,
Thank you for helping me. I should use your method. I think that I had a successful year. I’m 23 now. Last Friday we recorded Ali’s voice. It could help me very much. I listened to Ali’s voice every night.
Ali tells me that I should write a report now. Please tell me a subject and the principles of writing a report.
The meaning of Dashti is pertaining to a field or a farmland. Usually, Dashti pieces have some sorrows.
I think Egyptians people will start a revolution.
More letters,
Bahman

Dear Bahman, I'm sorry it took so long to answer. I was waiting for Ali to tell me what you would have to write on the test you will have to take. What is the name of the test? Ali says he will give you a book that will help you write a report.

Here is some help from my side of the pond. Reports are different than essays in American writing. A report is objective, has a lot of facts, and is often technical in nature. An essay is apt to be more opinion with facts and ideas to back up one's opinion.

I am going to give you an example of an essay that you might be asked to write on a Toepl test. Then I will give you several choices for you to write an essay.

ESSAY EXAMPLE:

What Makes a Good Neighbor

Human beings have always lived in small groups, even in very primitive times. There are good reasons for our social neighborliness. It is helpful because it gives us good friends, From the very beginning of the development of the society people lived in small groups. In these groups we find that some persons are better neighbors than others. Those who are there when we need them, or who listen to our problems and share in our joys are good neighbors. Let me show you what I mean.
This week, one of my neighbors became ill and needed a ride to the emergency room. When this happened, the lady next door immediately ran to give her help. If she had not helped, the neighbor might have died. We are too vulnerable to live in a society where no one cares what happens to another person.
A good neighbor is also willing to listen to our problems. We must be ready to also listen to our friend’s problems. In this way we can comfort one another in times of stress or painful times in our lives. Listening helps us explain ourselves and makes us feel that someone cares about us. Every human being needs that.
But good neighbors are not there just for the bad times. They are there to have fun with, have to our home on special occasions and go to entertaining events with. Who would want to go alone to a special party? Or to whom would we show pictures of our vacations? Sharing is a necessary part of life and without this life would be very lonely.
A day begins batter if you get a "Good morning" from a smiling and nice person.
And finally, if your neighbor is a wise person you can always get a good advice. It is a comfort to have someone close that makes us feel like they understand us and care about us. What a sad world it would be if we were all alone or, worse still, if we were in a society of those who were not good neighbors.

NOTICE: There is an introductory paragraph that gives a brief description of that you are going to write about.

Each point you have set forth in Paragraph 1 is then developed further in the following paragraphs.

The essay ends with a concluding paragraph.
In my next email, I will give you even more help. Have to leave now.

Hi Bahman, Back from my errand. On the Toepl you are asked to write and given a list of topics from which you can choose. Here are a few of those topics. Choose a topic and write, using the formula I presented in my last post.

1. It is said the borrowing money from a friend can harm the friendship. Do you agree? Why or why not? Use reasons and examples to explain your answer.

2. Do you agree or disagreewith this statement? Email, the internet and social communications like Twitter and Facebook have hurt true communications with people. Use reasons and examples to support your opinion.

3. Every generation is different than the last in important ways. How is your generation different from your parents' generation? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your answer.

4. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One should never judge a person by external appearances. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

5. Do your agree or disagree? People spend too much attention to less important things in life and fail to see the larger issues. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

If you write such an essay send it to Leaves and I will correct it and evaluate it for you.

Regards, from Sue

PS Please tell Faranak that I think this should apply to her work as well.

Dear Bahman, I know how confusing it must be fore you to get different directions for different sources. I just looked up the IELTs TEST EXAMPLE and the writing part of the test is very much the same as I explained in my other two comments. Please feel free to ask my any questions you wish about all this.
